Pokémon Moon is one of the pair of mainline Pokémon games released for the Nintendo 3DS system in 2016. Along with its counterpart, “Pokémon Sun”, it is a part of the seventh generation of Pokémon games. Here are some notable points about Pokémon Moon:

  • Setting: The game is set in the Alola region, which is inspired by the Hawaiian Islands.
  • Day-Night Cycle: “Pokémon Moon” is notable for having its day-night cycle shifted 12 hours from the system clock. This means that when it’s day in real life, it’s nighttime in the game and vice versa.
  • Alolan Forms: One of the unique features of the Alola region is the presence of Alolan forms of existing Pokémon. These Pokémon have different types, appearances, and abilities than their counterparts from other regions.
  • Trials: Instead of the traditional gym system seen in other Pokémon games, “Sun” and “Moon” introduced the Trial system. Players must complete various challenges set by Trial Captains, culminating in a battle against a powerful Totem Pokémon.
  • Z-Moves: These games introduced Z-Moves, which are special moves that can be used once per battle. They are powerful moves that are unlocked by equipping a Pokémon with a Z-Crystal specific to its type or species.
  • Story: Without giving away too much, the story revolves around the player’s journey as a Pokémon trainer in the Alola region. Along the way, they encounter Team Skull, the Aether Foundation, and mysterious Ultra Beasts. There’s also a focus on the legendary Pokémon tied to each version: Lunala for “Pokémon Moon”.
  • Rotom Pokédex: The player’s Pokédex in this game is inhabited by a Rotom, giving it a personality and providing helpful hints and comments throughout the journey.
  • QR Scanner: Players can scan QR codes to register Pokémon in their Pokédex and even encounter certain Pokémon that are otherwise hard to find in the Alola region.
  • Compatibility: “Pokémon Moon” is compatible with “Pokémon Bank”, which allows players to transfer Pokémon from previous games. Later on, it also became compatible with “Pokémon HOME”, a cloud-based storage system introduced in 2020.
  • Ultra Versions: A year after the release of “Pokémon Sun” and “Pokémon Moon”, enhanced versions titled “Pokémon Ultra Sun” and “Pokémon Ultra Moon” were released. These games feature an expanded storyline, new features, and some changes to the Alola region.
