Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team is one of a pair of games for the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon spin-off series, which is distinct from the main Pokémon series. “Red Rescue Team” was released for the Game Boy Advance, while its counterpart, “Blue Rescue Team,” was released for the Nintendo DS. Both games were released in 2005 in Japan and 2006 in other regions.

Gameplay and Story:

  • Dungeon Crawling: Unlike the main series Pokémon games, the Mystery Dungeon games are roguelike dungeon crawlers. Players navigate randomly generated tile-based dungeons, battling wild Pokémon and collecting items.
  • Starting Out: The game begins with a personality test that determines which Pokémon the player will become. The player also gets to choose a partner Pokémon. There are several possible Pokémon combinations based on the outcome of the personality test and player’s choice.
  • Story: The main character wakes up to discover they have turned into a Pokémon and have no memory of their past life as a human. Along with their partner Pokémon, they form a rescue team to help Pokémon in distress. As the game progresses, the player uncovers the mystery of their transformation and the natural disasters occurring in the world.
  • Rescue Missions: Missions involve navigating dungeons, battling wild Pokémon, rescuing Pokémon, delivering items, or finding specific Pokémon. After completing a dungeon, the player returns to the main hub, Pokémon Square, where they can buy items, store money, and accept new missions.
  • Evolution: Evolution works a bit differently in Mystery Dungeon compared to the main series. Pokémon can only evolve after completing certain requirements in the post-game, which is after the main storyline.
  • Teams and Battles: The player forms a team of up to four Pokémon to navigate the dungeons. Battles are turn-based, but they occur in real-time on the dungeon map. Each move and action counts as a turn, and players must strategize about positioning, using items, and picking the right moves.
  • Connectivity: Since “Red Rescue Team” was for the GBA and “Blue Rescue Team” for the DS, there were some connectivity features between the two. Players could rescue each other when one’s team was defeated in a dungeon by sharing a code.
