Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon are the seventh generation of the Pokémon series of video games developed by Game Freak and published by The Pokémon Company and Nintendo for the Nintendo 3DS. They were released worldwide in November 2016. Here are some key aspects and features of these games:

  • Alola Region: The games take place in the Alola region, which is inspired by the Hawaiian Islands. Alola is comprised of four main islands and one artificial island, each with its own unique environments and Pokémon.
  • No Traditional Gyms: Instead of the traditional Gym system present in previous Pokémon games, players challenge the trials of the Alola region. Each trial has its unique tasks, and after completing them, trainers face off against a Totem Pokémon. After clearing all trials on an island, players then challenge the island’s Kahuna.
  • Z-Moves: These are special moves that can only be used once per battle. Each Z-Move is specific to a Pokémon type and requires two things: a Z-Crystal corresponding to the move’s type, and a Pokémon knowing a move of the same type.
  • Alolan Forms: Some Pokémon from previous generations have different forms in the Alola region, known as their Alolan Forms. These Pokémon have different typings and appearances compared to their original forms. Examples include Alolan Vulpix (Ice-type) and Alolan Raichu (Electric/Psychic-type).
  • Rotom Pokédex: The player’s Pokédex is inhabited by a Rotom, a Pokémon which helps guide the player on their journey and provides insights and comments about the player’s progress.
  • Ultra Beasts: These are mysterious and powerful creatures that come from another dimension. They play a central role in the game’s post-main storyline.
  • Team Skull and Aether Foundation: These are the primary antagonist groups in “Sun” and “Moon”. Team Skull is a group of ruffians causing trouble around Alola, while the Aether Foundation is an organization with a hidden agenda concerning the Ultra Beasts.
  • Day and Night Cycle: Pokémon Sun and Moon have a 12-hour offset in their day-night cycles. This means that when it’s daytime in “Pokémon Sun”, it’s nighttime in “Pokémon Moon”, and vice versa. This affects certain in-game events and which Pokémon can be encountered.
  • Poke Ride: Instead of HMs, players use the Poke Ride feature to summon specific Pokémon to help navigate the environment, like riding a Tauros to break rocks or a Lapras to surf on water.
  • Battle Royal: This is a new battle format where four players enter a free-for-all battle, with each player choosing three Pokémon and sending out one at a time.
  • Story and Legendary Pokémon: The games’ narratives revolve around the mysteries of the Alola region, with Solgaleo (Sun) and Lunala (Moon) being the main Legendary Pokémon associated with each game.
  • Pokémon Refresh: An evolution of Pokémon-Amie from the sixth generation, Pokémon Refresh allows players to care for their Pokémon, curing them of status conditions and raising their affection.

These are just some of the key features and elements present in “Pokémon Sun” and “Pokémon Moon”. The games were followed by “Pokémon Ultra Sun” and “Pokémon Ultra Moon” in 2017, which expanded on the story and introduced additional features and Pokémon.
